Arnold Still Game For Conan Return

Arnold Schwarzenegger makes his return to full-time action hero duties with this Friday's The Last Stand after spending the better part of the 2000s in the Sacramento State House mowing down the California economy. I'll have more to say about The Last Stand in the next ep of the MovieFilm Podcast (we previously talked about the trailer here), but Ah-nuld is out there talking up several other potential projects he has in the pipeline, including a return to his iconic Conan the Barbarian role that I discussed here. Here's what he said to SpinOff when queried about picking up the Cimmerian's broadsword again after a thirty-year layover:
“A lot of it is timing. I would have chosen to do Conan already if it would have been ready, but the Universal Studios just bought the rights to Conan. They have an executive over there that happens to be a big believer in bringing back that character...Universal Studios was the first one to do the movie with Dino De Laurentiis and now they want to be back and do a bunch of Conan movies, but to do it really high quality, not as a B-movie. Do the high quality like the first one John Milius directed and that Dino De Laurentiis produced. That will be ready by sometime this year.”
FYI, you can't read the above without unconsciously doing the Arnold voice in your head. Can't be done. As we know, Conan last hit the big screen two years ago to underwhelming results (I still like it), and this project feels like it's coming about ten years too late. I'm also not sure how many Conan flicks ("a bunch"?) Universal expects to get out of the sixty-something Schwarzenegger. That said, there's probably more of an audience to see Big Arnie reprise the part than any other version, so this makes about as much sense as anything else. So long as they don't have him wearing the fur diaper he sported in 1982's crap-tastic Conan the Destroyer, I'm willing to give it a shot. The diaper's a deal-breaker, though.
