Bloomberg on NYC Islamic Center

While good ol' Joe Lieberman chimed in with his opposition earlier today, that wasn't enough to stop the last of the procedural hurdles being cleared for New York's Park51 Islamic Center (formerly Cordoba House) to move ahead as planned. If the discussions just on this site are any indication, then I fully expect the controversy to continue unabated before, during, and after the center's construction. In a press avail earlier today, NYC  mayor Michael Bloomberg, who's been steady in his support for the site, addressed the rancor head-on :
Let us not forget that Muslims were among those murdered on 9/11 and that our Muslim neighbors grieved with us as New Yorkers and as Americans. We would betray our values - and play into our enemies' hands - if we were to treat Muslims differently than anyone else. In fact, to cave to popular sentiment would be to hand a victory to the terrorists - and we should not stand for that.
